TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING WILL KILL YOU


The story had ended with a very tragic way. Mr. Bemis, the guy who loves reading, was left in nothingness. When the time he was going to commit suicide, he saw a lot of books. He realizes that there’s no reason in killing his self for he can live by just reading books all day long. But an unexpected thing happened; his eye glasses were broken so even the only thing he can do or chance of reading books was taken.
It showed that from the very beginning, Mr. Bemis, a man who’s fond of reading books, is discourage by his boss and his better-half, Mrs. Bemis.  His boss and wife believe that reading would not cause him any good thing, but why? Why would these two individuals think that it would harm Mr. Bemis? The answer is because he was addicted to it! He sacrifices time for that is allotted for other things just to read books. Yes, there’s nothing wrong of reading but too much of anything will cause harm.
If I were going to write an update or adaptation of story I would relate it in today’s situation. There was a guy named Ken Bemis who’s very addicted to DOTA (Defense of the Ancient), a kind of video game. He was very addicted to it that he escaped classes just to play the said video game. One fine day, their town was bombed by unknown people, everybody died except for him because he was in safe place playing DOTA. When he goes out of his secret place, he found out there’s nobody alive but him. He cried. He feels so alone that he thinks of killing his self but he realizes that he has a laptop with him; he can play DOTA and can live his life with just playing. He played DOTA all day but another problem came out, there was no electricity so his laptop shut down. He got depress and after 3 days, he died. The End.

REACTION PAPER: A Trip to the Moon


“WOW!!!”


The “A Trip to the Moon” (French: Voyage dans la Lune) is a 1902 French silent film directed by Georges Méliès. It is the most famous of the over 500 short films produced by cinema pioneer Georges Méliès between 1896 and 1912, and its signature image of a bullet-shaped rocket lodging itself in the eye of a smirking moon is one of the most recognizable images in cinema history.


A wow-with-a-lot-of-exclamation-point would probably be my first reaction if I were present during the first screening of the of the said film especially during that time the technology in making films or movies are not that advance unlike today. Furthermore, I think it would make me entertained, very interested, and curious.


The story provided viewers of how the director and creator imagine outer space that time and their ideas on how to make it possible to travel to the moon. In the story, it shows that moon has similarities with our planet Earth like it has air same as the air we breathe for the astronomers in the film did not use any apparatus/device/machine for the purpose breathing. It also shows that moon has extra-terrestrial beings living on it with weird characteristic. Perhaps, this idea of extra-terrestrial beings will make the viewers scared for they will be thinking of the possibility that those creatures might go to Earth and destruct it.


I really salute the director and the other people who contributed to make the film successful for not only leaving a mark to the film industry but also it pushes the people to be curious, TO LIVE WITH CURIOSITY!

Reaction Paper: Futurama


From 1999 to 2999!!!


“My God! It's the future. My parents, my co-workers, my girlfriend; I'll never see any of them again. YAHOO!”


Futurama, an American adult animated science fiction sitcom, was created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening and David C. Cohen for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series, which was first aired on March 28, 1999, follows the adventures of a late-20th-century New York pizzza delivery boy, Philip J. Fry.


The first episode of Futurama, Space Pilot 3000, was about Fry who’s very glad when he was able to escape his present life especially his present job. Though he was able to escape his present life after being unwittingly cryogenic frozen waking up a thousand years later, still what future offers him was a job he undeniably hates, delivery boy. This shows that being a delivery boy is his function by which nature suits him and he must not meddle with the functions of others. The future society depicted by the show was you must do your job and fulfill it for you will be treated as a criminal if you do not.


The episode shows that in the future we will be interacting with aliens from outer space and robots as our co-citizens. It also shows the advancement of the technology like transporting from one place to another within just a snap using the air tubes, flying spaceships everywhere, preservation of the heads of human beings, and what surprised me the most was the suicidal machine where there are options on the what kind of process you prefer on committing suicide.


The show does not engage in the time travel machine most of us expecting where you can go either future or past. The time travelling can only go to the future. It’s like freezing and preserving the body in a very unique way for a certain time – can be seconds, minutes, days, months, years and so on.

Dr. Juan Salcedo Jr.: Vanguard of Public Health


The Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. (NFP) building located at E. Rodriguez, Sr. Avenue, Quezon City is the headquarters of NFP founded by the national scientist, Dr. Juan Salcedo Jr. as a way to help communities achieve good nutrition and optimal health benefits.

Dr. Juan Salcedo Jr.: “Vanguard of Public Health”

Dr. Juan Salcedo Jr. was born on September 24, 1904 in Pasay City. He was often called as the “Vanguard of Public Health”. He took his degree of Doctor of Medicine in University of the Philippines and as Master of Science in Biochemistry in Columbia University. Since then, he advocated for the department of health and nutrition in the country by devoting his service in research and serving the government agencies.

He served as the President of the World Health Organization, Araneta University Foundation and Professional and Head of Department of Physiological Hygiene at the College of Medicine in UP Manila. In addition to that, he also served as the Secretary of Health of Department of Health during President Quirino’s time. He also researched all about health factors such as vitamins and fatty acids. This is only one of his greatest contributions in the field of nutrition and public health.


Aside from the perseverance of him in researching vaccine, vitamins and fatty acids, it was his perseverance of helping and serving his fellowmen that made him deserving to receive recognitions and awards.

An Old GAME in a New Form

Well, if not, let me introduce it to you in a Story.


Once upon a time,

in 1970’s Soforonio H Pasola and his son, Ronnie Pasola, was inventing a game patterned after modern-day combat, where battling tactics may be applied.

“……with a board almost just like in Chess, and setting up the pieces so that they were unseen by the enemies like in mahjong and card games were some of the inspiration in forming the game.”
            “Iwa Jima with the victorious marines provides the heroic angle for ending the game – the symbolic raising of the flag signaling the capture of enemy territory.
            “James Bond and Mata Hari reminded me to put in a pair of spies with the introduction of the arbiter between two players securing their cloak-and dagger maneuvers.
            “Finally, the movie “Night of the Generals” wrapped it up inspiring the dramatic touch needed and people..
            “Thus, the Games of the General was born and conceived.”

            Its first public introduction was on February 28, 1973.

Every day,

 The game’s objective is either to a flag reach the end of the board of the opponent or be able to eat the opponent’s flag.
Unlike in Chess, there is no single position. You may deploy your forces in a manner that there is enough protection for the flag to be not eaten or in such a way that it can attract the opponent’s pieces. In fact, there are 7, 163, 729, 901, 591, 021, 158, 400, 00 starting position combination where you can place your 21 pieces freely in the 3x9 out of the 8x9 (27 out of 72 squares) playing board.
Aside from merely or largely a game of chance, it also need the use of logic. The middle of the game is the time for serious assessment when you must bank on your MEMORY and PSYCHOLOGICAL PROWESS to defeat the enemy like the pieces you and your opponent have identified through challenge, deduction and/or other pieces’ behavior. Based on what you can remember, you may start applying Psychological or PSY-WAR tactics which is the heart of winning.
Players can also speak with others during matches, hoping to make a false impression on where the flag is.
Controlling your opponent’s mind is the psychological ability to maneuver pieces on the board with the objective of leading your opponent to believe assumptions which you desire him to believe.   

For the past years, GG has been played only through the use of a board game, the playing pieces and a volunteer Arbiter.

Until one day,

            SalpakanNa a group of programmers developed an online adaptation of the game which enable GG enthusiast to play the game, whenever and wherever they wish to, and a chance to play with other tough high ranked players.
            SalpakanNa Version 1.0 was released in early 2010.
            The website, www.salpakanna.com, and official facebook fanpage, www.facebook.com/SalpakanNa caters online forums and became an avenue to players to meet virtually and organize online GG tournaments and monthly ranking.

This page is the official fan page of SalpakanNa.com. However, SalpakanNa doesn't own the copyright for this game, but with a little permission from madam Tes Pasola, the server is still up for free until further notice. Salpakanna encourages players who respect other players during the games. We discourage those who choose to behave in an unruly, disrespectful manner. SalpakanNa will take appropriate steps to ensure players adhere to these guidelines. The SalpakanNa server and client software thwart any form of game cheats so you can have an enjoyable and fun game at SalpakanNa

Because of that,

            Being accessible to the public and because of the love for sport, many players are encouraged to join the growing community of GG Players.

Robots for Emergency Response
                On December 26, 2004, a 9.3 Magnitude earthquake centred off the west coast of Sumatra set off a tsunami that killed 240,000 people. On March 11, 2011, the Fukushima I nuclear power plant at Fukushima Prefecture encounters a catastrophic failure that causes a meltdown and becomes the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. These two (2) disasters have something in common. They opened the eyes of people to the glaring truth that today’s standards of emergency response is simply not enough to cope with the numerous disasters that grip our world. The world simply cannot rely on fire fighters, paramedics, and policemen to risk their lives saving others. There has to be another solution to our emergency response woes, and the solution to that are robots.
                Two pioneering organizations in the field of emergency response robots are DHARPA and Honda. In the wake of the Fukushima disaster, the Japanese authorities were criticised for not utilizing their massive technological resources in emergency response robots. Honda, however, has answered the call of the people for emergency response robots. A veteran in the field of robotics, Honda is now on the development phase of a new generation of robots designed to negotiate through collapsed buildings as well as operate levers, valves and switches. It can do this thanks to its humanoid design patterned after ASIMO. These humanoids have the mobility of human beings as well as have hands modelled after human beings. These robots are designed to mimic the effectiveness of fire fighters while keeping them out of harm’s way.[1]
                Another organization, DARPA, has developed a 6 foot 2 inch humanoid robot designed to respond to natural or man-made disasters. The ATLAS, as it is called, is an autonomous robot that has an innovative feature, modular wrists. This feature allows ATLAS to have “add-ons” attached to him to specialize it for different needs (i.e. a saw can be attached to clear trees in a mudslide whereas a hose can be attached when fighting fires). DARPA main objective in producing ATLAS is to eliminate casualties to the emergency response teams that are first on disaster zones. Another key feature of ATLAS is that it does not need to be remote controlled, which comes in handy in areas where the terrain may render radio communication useless. The robot’s head is fitted with LIDAR, a remote sensing technology that uses a LASER to measure distance.[2]
                Despite all these advances on the use of robots for emergency response, there are still some major hurdles that it has to overcome before being accepted by society. A major factor would be the lack of a conscience. As can be seen in the movie I, Robot, a robot is designed to help the person or respond to a situation where the probability of success is high and not based on whether the person that ends up getting abandoned is a child or whether the disaster that the robots do not respond to wipes out half a country. There has to still be an element of human control and until artificial intelligence is developed to a level at par with that of a human brain, it is going to be a long time before anyone sees a robot save a damsel in distress from a burning building.
